Lanarkshire Larder Members Tea Tasting at the The Scottish Tea House

Lanarkshire Larder Members enjoy a tea tasting at the Scottish Tea House

Thank you so much to our member Joanne, at Scottish Tea House for hosting an informative and thoroughly delightful afternoon of tea tasting for our Lanarkshire Larder Members.

Opened early 2023 Scottish Tea House, located just off the M74 at Dillarburn, is situated in a beautiful countryside location in the rolling hills of Lanarkshire. They carefully source delicious loose leaf tea from around the world and are currently perfecting growing their own tea.

Our lucky members enjoyed a tour of their polytunnel, home to the Georgian tea bushes which are dormant at this time of year. 1 tunnel containing about 1kg of bushes produces about 250g of tea leaves and our Scottish climate makes it a challenging task but it can be done!

We learned that tea leaves can provide the chemical called Theanine, which is proven to promote feelings of calm and relaxation. We also learned about our many taste receptors found in our noses to compliment the experience!

Members then enjoyed 5 different teas from around the world, a personal favourite was the Oriental Beauty, an oolong tea with notes of honey. Joanne stocks up to 30 different teas in the Tea House. We learned about the importance of the temperature of the water and the brewing time for the “perfect serve”. Which did not involve our traditional milk and 2 sugars!

We were then treated to a delicious homemade scone, with a traditional breakfast tea, unlike any bagged supermarket brand we’ve tasted before. While soaking in the views of Lanarkshire through the glass front of the Tea House.

You can now book an Afternoon Tea where the menu is inspired by our brilliant food and drink producers of Lanarkshire Larder. From Millers larder pork, black pudding, apple & spiced tomato chutney sausage rolls to Ellis zesty gin cake. Joanne has been experimenting in the kitchen with earl grey fruit loaf which we all happily quality assured for her!

You can also book your own Tea Tasting experience via their website. The Tea House is open Thursday to Sunday 11-4pm.

Thanks again to Joanne at Scottish Tea House for an educational and relaxing networking afternoon for our Lanarkshire Larder members.

and catering services can be booked by the public for private events on site.
